Owners of pet stores know that the majority of people purchase pets on a whim. They see a cute, furry animal and want to take it home, not realizing the extent of cost, time and energy it takes to properly care for any pet. In fact, salespeople have termed a puppy dog sales tactic where if they let a prospect feel, touch or hold an item, they are much more likely to buy. Unfortunately, this results in many pets being either returned to the store (best case) or simply abandoned ( far too often).

With little effort on the owners part, there are ways to reduce costs, time and effort to care for their pet. Obviously the best thing to do is for an owner to first research what they are getting into. Even certain fish require feedings multiple times per day, weekly aquarium cleanings, filtered water and other fish or aquatic creatures to help keep them company or for hygienic reasons. No pet can be treated like a cactus and just put on the self for display with little to no care.

After purchasing the dog, cat or particular animal, it is best to take it to the vet to be check on its health and get recommendations from the vet that will eventually be treating the pet if it becomes sick. Most vets can recommend the cheapest type of food and tell owners what types of vitamins or supplements are necessary. Pet stores that offer organic, high priced food and multiple supplements very often will give you a bias opinion. They are, after all, in the business of selling specialized products and have a vested interest in telling you all the extras that dogs and cats need.

Many dogs and cats can be trained to become more independent and require less care. There are items such as self-cleaning liter boxes and dog doors that allow the owner to not need to spend so much extra time caring for their pet. If you have a back yard or wish to install an electronic guard, dog doors allow the pet to get the exercise they need as well as take care of nature. This does require extra time on behalf of the owner to train the dog where to go and how to use the door, however, after an effective training routine, the pet has learned the proper behavior for life and no further attention needs to be paid in these areas.
